Swedan is also called as Herbal Steam Bath. After doing Ayurvedic massage, steam bath is given. Swedan is a very popular and simple therapy of Ayurveda.
Before the administration of panchakarma, the body of the patient is to be suitably prepared, and therapeutic measures used for this purpose is called preparation therapy. Swedan is one of them. Hence Ayurvedic massage and steam bath is carried out prior to any panchakarma treatment.
To keep the body healthy and to prevent as well as cure disease Swedan is done after Abhyangam.
In Swedan steam is generated with the help of herbal medicines like Nirgundi, Shewga, Dashmool, Bala, Ashwagandha, etc.. This herbal steam applied over affected part of the body or given to full body depending on nature of the disease to be treated. In our clinic swedan(steam therapy) is given in two ways – 1. Nadi Shek 2. Sarvang Shek. Nadi Shek is mainly used for localized pain & is given until pain subside. Sarvang Shek is used as a preparatory procedure of panchakarma and also for detoxification of doshas, is given for 15 to 20 minutes till sweating appears to the whole body.
